What to Expect on a Horizon West Fishing Charter

How to Get There

We will communicate with you beforehand to figure out the best pickup time and location for your group. Most cruise ships come in a block from our dock, so if you are arriving in Sitka on a cruise, we can pick you up in the parking lot right where you get off the ship. If you are staying elsewhere, we can pick you up where needed.

What to Bring

Once we pick you up, we will bring you to the lodge and get you outfitted in rain gear, making sure you have the required license. Please note that clients are responsible for obtaining a fishing license in advance, but Horizon will provide guidance and can print it at the lodge for you if needed.

The Fishing Experience

After orientation at our lodge, we will take you to the dock to get on the boat and get out on your fishing adventure. Expect a boat ride of anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to reach the fishing grounds—our Horizon West guides go where the fish are most concentrated, so the distance can vary. But don’t worry—the journey itself is part of the experience. You’ll take in the breathtaking Alaskan scenery and wildlife sightings that most people only dream about.

What's Included

All equipment, a deli-style lunch/snacks, and water will be provided on the boat, so all you have to do is be ready for adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Day Charters in Sitka

Is it worth spending my time in Sitka on a fishing boat?

We may be biased, but we certainly think so. Sitka is one of the world's top fishing destinations, thanks to its nutrient-rich waters, abundant marine life, and unique location along major salmon migration routes. These productive waters support thriving populations of salmon, halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and more, along with incredible marine and coastal wildlife that can be seen during your fishing charter.

When can I go fishing in Sitka?

Our fishing season in Sitka starts May 15th and ends the first week of September.

  • Salmon: May, June, and July are the top months for King salmon, though there are good numbers of them in the area into September. Silver salmon begin showing in June and build to a crescendo through July, August, and the first week of September.
  • Halibut: Halibut are available all summer.
  • Rockfish: Assorted rockfish are available all year long.
  • Lingcod: Lingcod will open and close intermittently. Please visit our regulations page for more information.

Can I keep the meat from the fish I catch?

Absolutely, but it is not a requirement. Keep in mind that if you arrive on a cruise ship, you will not be permitted to get back on the ship with your catch. However, we can easily pack and ship your fish meat to the address of your choosing with FedEx or Alaska Air Cargo (at your expense). Our team at Horizon West Fishing Adventures handles fish processing and packaging with extreme care to ensure your meat stays as fresh as possible for as long as possible.

What kind of boat will I be on?

Our charters are operated on our custom-built 30'–34' Coldwater Boats, which are designed for Alaska's waters, offering a safe, stable, and comfortable fishing experience. Each boat features a wide 10-foot beam for plenty of fishing space, a heated cabin, and an onboard bathroom.

Do I need to have any fishing experience prior to my charter?

Not at all. Our fishing charters are catered to anglers of all skill levels. Whether it's your first fishing trip or you're a seasoned angler, if you find yourself in Sitka, our experienced fishing guides will lead you every step of the way on an unforgettable fishing adventure.

Do I need any specialized gear?

No - Horizon West Fishing Adventures provides rain gear and all fishing equipment. So, besides a valid Alaskan fishing license, all you need to bring is yourself and a good attitude!
